FACTS:
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses pressurized oxygen in healing wounds. It can be done on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
How does it work?
HBOT increases the amount of oxygen being carried by the blood to the organs and tissues, enhancing the body's ability to heal itself.
What will happen during my treatment?
During therapy, you are placed into a comfortable and relaxing see-through atmosphere-controlled chamber. There is plenty of room in the chamber for freedom of movement. During each treatment, which typically lasts 2 hours, you may listen to music, watch tv, or a movie, converse with the staff or take a nap.
Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe?
Our board-certified medical team is highly skilled and experienced and will closely supervise and monitor your treatment to assure that each session is safe, comfortable and effective. Although HBOT has very limited, or no side-effects, our medical staff will discuss any possible treatment issues with you.
How many treatments are typically required?
The number of HBOT treatments you will require will depend on your specific condition, and the course of your therapy will be discussed before you begin. Depending upon the condition and severity, some patients with non-healing wounds might require 20 to 40 treatments. Treatments typically last 2 hours and are administered daily, five times per week.
How should I prepare for my treatments?
Your physician and the AWCS Hyperbaric team will give you specific instructions before your first session. Some general precautions to remember are:
List all medications. Some medications can change the way your body responds to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, so it is very important to give your Hyperbaric physician a detailed list of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs that you may be taking.
No Smoking!
Tobacco products can limit the amount of blood and oxygen circulating to your body tissues.
Tell the Hyperbaric physician if you are sick. Cold and flu symptoms may require a temporary delay in your treatment schedule until you feel better.
What should I wear?
You'll be given 100 percent cotton garments to wear during therapy.
How do I start Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
You can speak with your physician to see if HBOT is appropriate for your condition. Contact us with any questions. Call us at 801-964-2008 to schedule an initial visit with our Medical Poviders.
Will Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy be covered by my insurance?
HBOT is reimbursable by Medicare and most other third-party payors for medically accepted conditions. In most cases, we'll need to obtain pre-authorization prior to the initiation of therapy.
